Juncos Landfill

As of 2009, Juncos Landfill has approximately 2,700,000 tons of waste in place. The total permitted design capacity of the facility is 3,000,000 tons, meaning the site is currently at approximately 90% of its total design capacity. The facility accepts approximately 95,000 tons of waste per year based on the most recent annual data. At the current rate of fill, the facility is projected to reach capacity and close around 2012.

Juncos Landfill has an LFG energy project with a current status of 'Low Potential'. Landfill gas recovery projects capture methane that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and in many cases generating electricity or other usable energy.

Juncos Landfill does not currently have an active landfill gas collection system. Landfill gas is produced naturally as organic waste decomposes underground. Facilities without active collection systems may use passive venting — this facility uses passive venting or flaring. Future LFG collection projects may be considered as the volume of waste in place increases.
