High Plains SLF currently covers approximately 37 acres with a depth of approximately 40 feet. The facility opened in 1980 and has been in continuous operation since then. The design specifications call for a total area of 90 acres. The size of a landfill reflects both its operational history and the volume of waste it has processed over its lifetime of service to the surrounding community.

High Plains SLF does not currently have an active landfill gas collection system. Landfill gas is produced naturally as organic waste decomposes underground. Facilities without active collection systems may use passive venting to manage gas migration. Future LFG collection projects may be considered as the volume of waste in place increases.
