Description

Brooks Landfill is a closed public landfill located in Wichita, Sedgwick, Kansas. It has been in operation since 1966. The facility is projected to close in 2001. The facility is operated by City of Wichita, KS. As of 1999, the facility holds approximately 10,737,610 tons of waste in place — approximately 78% of its total permitted capacity. Its total design capacity is 13,751,419 tons. The annual waste acceptance rate is approximately 432,700 tons per year. The site covers approximately 303.1 acres with a maximum depth of 120 feet. The facility operates a landfill gas collection system, and has an shutdown landfill gas-to-energy project. The project uses Boiler technology. Capturing landfill gas reduces greenhouse gas emissions and, in many cases, generates clean renewable energy.
