About This Facility

Description

Bovoni Landfill is a closed public landfill located in Bovoni, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. It has been in operation since 1980. The facility is projected to close in 2019. As of 2008, the facility holds approximately 1,500,000 tons of waste in place — approximately 43% of its total permitted capacity. Its total design capacity is 3,500,000 tons. The annual waste acceptance rate is approximately 85,000 tons per year. The site covers approximately 34 acres with a maximum depth of 90 feet. The facility operates a landfill gas collection system, and has an candidate landfill gas-to-energy project. Capturing landfill gas reduces greenhouse gas emissions and, in many cases, generates clean renewable energy.
