About This Facility

Description

31st Street Landfill is a closed private landfill located in Westchester, Cook, Illinois. It has been in operation since 1960. The facility is projected to close in 1982. The facility is operated by John Sexton Sand & Gravel and owned by Archdiocese of Chicago. As of 1982, the facility holds approximately 9,582,454 tons of waste in place — approximately 100% of its total permitted capacity. Its total design capacity is 9,582,457 tons. The annual waste acceptance rate is approximately 66,272 tons per year. The site covers approximately 250 acres. The facility operates a landfill gas collection system, and has an shutdown landfill gas-to-energy project. The project uses Reciprocating Engine technology. Capturing landfill gas reduces greenhouse gas emissions and, in many cases, generates clean renewable energy.
