About This Facility

Description

I-66 Landfill is a closed public landfill located in Fairfax, Fairfax, Virginia. It has been in operation since 1964. The facility is projected to close in 1983. As of 2012, the facility holds approximately 5,000,000 tons of waste in place. The site covers approximately 110 acres with a maximum depth of 75 feet. The facility operates a landfill gas collection system, and has an operational landfill gas-to-energy project. The project uses Direct Thermal technology. Capturing landfill gas reduces greenhouse gas emissions and, in many cases, generates clean renewable energy.
