I-66 Landfill

As of 2012, I-66 Landfill has approximately 5,000,000 tons of waste in place. At the current rate of fill, the facility is projected to reach capacity and close around 1983.

I-66 Landfill has an operational landfill gas-to-energy (LFGTE) project using a Direct Thermal system. The facility generates approximately 0.7 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) of landfill gas, of which approximately 0.5 mmscfd is actively collected. The landfill gas contains approximately 52.1% methane content. The gas collection system includes 66 extraction wells. This type of project converts waste-generated methane into usable electricity, reducing greenhouse gas emissions while generating renewable energy for the local grid.

I-66 Landfill currently covers approximately 110 acres with a depth of approximately 75 feet. The facility opened in 1964 and has been in continuous operation since then. The size of a landfill reflects both its operational history and the volume of waste it has processed over its lifetime of service to the surrounding community.
