Settlers Hill Recycling Disposal Facility is a closed public landfill located in Batavia, Kane. It has been in operation since 1968. The facility is projected to close in 2006. The facility is operated by WM and owned by Kane County Department of Environmental Management. As of 2006, the facility holds approximately 19,560,637 tons of waste in place. The annual waste acceptance rate is approximately 1,047,698 tons per year. The site covers approximately 288 acres. The facility operates a landfill gas collection system, and has an operational landfill gas-to-energy project. The project uses Gas Turbine technology. Capturing landfill gas reduces greenhouse gas emissions and, in many cases, generates clean renewable energy.
